About Mr. Apel

Mr. Apel earned his Master of Liberals Arts Degree at Baker University in 1997 and has his Bachelors of Arts in Middle/Secondary Education from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas in 1987. This year, Mr. Apel is returning to the Blue Valley School District after being away for the last fourteen years. David taught A. P. U.S. History and Non-Western World History at Blue Valley High School from 1992 – 2001.
After leaving the Blue Valley District in 2001, he taught at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, Germany. The school, started during the Cold War was a bilingual school where students took classes in both English and German. Half the faculty and students were German and the other half were English speakers, mostly Americans. After leaving Germany, David taught at two private schools in Kentucky, The Sayre School in Lexington and Kentucky Country Day School (KCD) in Louisville. Some of the duties he performed at these schools included leading student trips to Washington D.C. every year and sponsoring student trips to Peru and Ghana. He also was Student Council sponsor at KCD. He was on the Diversity Committees at both Sayre and KCD.
Recently, for two years Mr. Apel was also the Head Cross Country coach at Trimble County High School in Bedford, KY where his son was on the team. The team qualified for the Kentucky State meet both years he was coach. During his tenure the first individual athlete in school history placed in the top ten at State. As Track coach there he also successfully qualified several athletes for the state meet including coaching a State Champion and two third place finishers at State. David was also Head Cross Country coach during his time at Blue Valley High School where the girl’s teams were in the top three teams at Kansas 5A State his last three years there.
During Mr. Apel’s career he has taught almost every Social Studies class, including A.P. Psychology, A.P. United States History and A.P. European History. Some electives he has taught include the Holocaust, The Constitution and Supreme Court and Non-Western World History.
David is a past A.P. United States History grader (2006 – 2009) and currently grades A.P. Psychology exams (2011 – present) for the Educational Testing Service. This past year he was a Finalist for KCD’s Exceptional Teaching Award. David received educational study grants to both Ireland and China during his time in Kentucky.
David has two children, Christian who is a sophomore at Centre College in Danville, KY where he is majoring in Physics and Engineering and is on the Cross Country and Track teams and Savannah who will be a Junior in high school this school year. She is heavily involved in competitive dance and art. David has traveled to four continents, forty-nine states and has traversed the entire Oregon Trail. He is a marathon runner who has run eight marathons.
